Job Description:

The Health Educator reports to the Director of Communications and Policy Development or his or her designee within the Waterbury Department of Public Health. This position is responsible for the promotion of programming through maintenance of the Department's social media profile, updates to the Department's website, development of a monthly newsletter for external partners, and communications between the Health Department and other Departments in the City of Waterbury. The position also cultivates and maintains relationships between the Department and media outlets and accompanies staff to events where media may be present to provide support and coordination and to document the event for our social media. This position will also be closely involved in development of staff training and assisting with tracking professional development of staff according to their individual position's required trainings and certifications. -DISTINGUISHING FEATURESThis position will work closely with Program Coordinators and Section Chiefs to translate their program goals and grant outcomes into communication plans and strategies. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with key concepts of health equity, diversity, equity and inclusion and will have an understanding of techniques to reach historically underserved communities.EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)Plan, organize, and implement health outreach and educational programming aligned with Departmental priorities. Maintain the Department's social media profile and expand the scope of social media outlets on which the Department has a presence.Assure the Department's regular coverage by news media outlets for newsworthy activities and accomplishments.Mitigate risk for the Department by effective management of media relationships.Meet regularly with Section Chiefs and Program Coordinators as liaison between the Program Decision Support Section and other Departmental staff.Review and maintain staff continuing education requirements and promote professional development opportunities among staff.Document programmatic efforts in the community through reporting, photography and promotion through a regular monthly newsletter.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of the key principals of mass health communication and health promotion techniques. Familiarity with key concepts in health education and theories of health promotion in public health settings.Effective organizational skills and ability to coordinate efforts among a diverse array of programs and staff.Ability to understand complex issues and translate concepts into digestible communications that effectively inform the public about the Department's activities and priorities.Experience developing educational materials for adult, child and adolescent audiences.Training in the key mechanisms of adult education and techniques to engage adult learners.Strong written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to produce work under pressure and in time-sensitive environments.ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Art, Graphic Design, Marketing, English, Public Health, Nursing, Allied Health or related field. Master's in Public Administration, Public Health, Communications, Public Relations or a related field preferred. Certified Health Education Specialist Certification preferred or willingness to pursue this certification within six months of hire. Strong organizational skills, exemplary writing ability and strong public speaking skills. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid driver's license, have access to a vehicle for personal use and ability to work outside of normal work hours on occasion, including nights or weekends when community events are taking place.
