Job Description:

The Surgical Clinical Reviewer (SCR) collects and submits data to the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) registry. This is accomplished through high quality data abstraction of patient disease state, surgical procedure, and postoperative care and documentation for all surgical procedures for the hospital. The SCR works closely with the members of the surgical department and quality and performance improvement department.

Work Hours/Shift:

  • 40hrs full time Mon-Fri days

You Will Be Responsible For:

  • Exceptional Patient Care: Identifies surgical patients for inclusion into database through application of program criteria and protocols

  • Excellent Communicator: Contacts patients postoperatively for the purpose of identifying possible occurrences associated with the surgical procedure

  • Strong Educator: The SCR maintains the responsibility for being the educational resource for ACS NSQIP for internal and external audiences by developing educational material and delivering presentations

  • Technical Familiarity: Generates and interprets ACS NSQIP reports on quarterly basis. Collects, validates and enters data into assigned databases. Collects preoperative, operative and postoperative data components through hospital EMR

  • Active Teamwork: Attends weekly M&M conference to ensure reliable data to assign postoperative occurrences

Requirements:

  • Clinical exposure to patient information, preferably in public health

  • Registered Nurse preferred; If RN, must be licensed to practice nursing in the State of CT

  • Ability to complete accurate data abstraction; RHIA, RHIT preferred

  • Ability to complete NSQIP training and pass certification exam within 6 months of hire, if not current SCR certified

  • Ability to generate functional reporting; Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to build relationships, gain alignment for clinical support, and be able to articulate questions to receive an appropriate level of support from superiors and peers.
